Okay, so, there was a discussion going on over at spock_uhura about one particular member of the group that posted a fandom secret complaining about the fanfic. They claimed that every single fanfic featured baby!fic (not true), that Spock was constantly written as a emotionally repressed human (which, tbh, he was in both the reboot movie and the original series) and that all Uhura was was a self!insert....

So...one member of the comm, who is an amazing fanfic writer, posted a thread wanting people to write Uhura as a self!insert...how would she act if she really was a self insert of fanfic authors. I think, reading this thread (http://community.livejournal.com/spock_uhura/607001.html ) shows just how wrong that secretmaker was :)

This is my little contribution to the post:

And here is how she would pass the time during her procrastination"

-------

Uhura was bent over the computer console, her eyes glued to the screen as her fingers hovered over the keyboard, pushing the keys in a rather precise method that made little sense to Commander Spock, who was watching her, curious what had captured her attention so much that little else in the room mattered at the moment.

Finally, Spock broke the silence, or rather his silence. She was quietly muttering to herself, phrases that were of little consequence to him, constantly complaining about something called “DPS” and “aggro.” He was sure the terms were something she was familiar with, but they made little sense to him.

“Nyota, have you completed the report that was assigned in your Advanced Romulan Class?”

“Uh? Oh. Um, no, not yet. It’s due in a couple of days. I have time,” she replied dismissively before returning her attention to the computer.

“You have yet to begin work on it, am I correct?”

“So? I’ll get it done. Don’t worry.”

“Nyota,” Spock said in a warning tone.

Uhura sighed. “Seriously, Spock. Can’t this wait a few minutes? I told you I was going to be busy for a while.”

“Nyota,” Spock said exasperated by her behavior. “I really must insist…”

“Spock,” she cut in, her eyes glued to the screen. “I bet it would surprise you to know that every report I have ever written for any of my classes, including yours, was done the night before in one draft. And on every single one of them - well, most of them - including yours, I got the highest marks possible.” She turned her attention away from the screen for a moment, bringing her eyes to his, glaring at him.

Spock was flabbergasted for a moment before regaining his control. “Nyota, please, given the scope of this project I must insist that you begin earlier than your normal routine.”

Uhura rolled her eyes. Suddenly she whirled back around to the screen, hearing and seeing something that made her mouth gape open, a surprised gasp escaping. “Oh, my God,” she said in shock.

“Nyota?”

“I…can’t believe it.”

Spock stared at her for a second, wondering to what she was referring. A moment later, she whirled around in her chair, jumped to her feet and stormed toward him, anger clear on her face. “You got us wiped! A 1% wipe! We almost had him! The Lich King was going to DIE! We were going to kill him! And you,” she emphasized, thrusting her finger at his chest. “Got us all killed!”

“Excuse me?”

“You distracted me! I’m the tank! I keep the bad guys off everyone else. You distracted me! I get distracted, the DPS pulls the aggro off me and the healer goes down. Without a healer, *everyone* dies.” She groaned. “Ugh, they probably think I’m a fail!tank now and will never ever invite me to their raid ever again!”

“I can see that I have upset you and -”

“Ya think?”

“…and I will now take my leave of you.” Spock walked towards the door, Uhura glaring at his back. At the door, he turned to face her and issued his final words. “Think of the positive, Nyota. There is now plenty of time for you to begin work on your report.”

He narrowly ducked the book that was thrown at his head.

Disclaimer: I don't own Spock or Uhura...though I wish I could borrow Spock...Also, I don't own World of Warcraft, that's all Blizzard Entertainment

Emilie Autumn Concert - 10.20.2009

My sister and I went to the Emilie Autumn concert earlier tonight (techinically, yesterday...) It was a pretty awesome show.

Very theatrical performances, gorgeous set and awesome costumes with a Gothic/Baroque/Victorian flair.

Watching Emilie rock out on the violin was pretty awesome. And yes, 'rock out' is a pretty fitting term, though not one someone would think of when violins are involved. But, trust me, she was rocking it :) It was really awesome to hear that kind of talent on the violin in person :D

Under the cut are a bunch of pictures taken by either me or my sister. And they're not perfect. There was a big, tall, bald guy in front of me.... ¬_¬ he kept getting in the way. Oh well :)

Anyway...

Definitely not dial-up friendly (you can click on the image to see the whole thing...apparently my LJ design cuts it off :( )

<img
Title: One Way or Another - Prologue

Rating: PG-13 (for now)
Genre: Drama/Adventure/Romance
Characters/Pairing(s): Spock/Uhura, Kirk, McCoy, Pike.
Warnings: Violence and language, though not really much of either….right now anyway. Oh, some made up alien stuff and some potentially made up Starfleet regulation things...
Word Count: 1,228
Summary: Many months after the destruction of Vulcan, the crew of the Enterprise assist in a diplomatic mission, but quickly find themselves caught up in a wave of bureaucracy and red tape after they encounter an alien terrorist group who manages to take one of their own.

Disclaimer: Star Trek and associated characters created by Gene Roddenberry. I own nothing at all. …which makes me all kinds of sad, ‘cause I really wanna borrow Spock for a while.

Author’s Notes: I wanted to do the Star Trek Big Bang Challenge….but, alas, I didn’t make it. I had thought long and hard for an idea, but it didn’t come to me until a week before the first draft was due…and though I tried to get it done in time, the idea kept changing on me so I never really got much written. And as it stands now, I’ve only got the prologue completed and working on the next chapter. I wanted to know what people thought about it before invested my blood any further :)

Prologue

“I’m sorry, Commander. I tried to get Command to change their minds, but they’ve already got it marked as a lost cause.”

Commander Spock stood stoically in the large waiting room, hands clasped behind his back. His gaze was focused out the window towards the San Francisco Bay, revealing none of the trepidation he felt internally. Captain James T. Kirk paced the waiting room, less stoic than his Vulcan friend, his anger and apprehension displayed on his face. Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy stood against the wall, his pose somewhat mimicking Rodin’s The Thinker, his arms crossed with one hand propped under his chin, as he gazed worriedly towards the floor.

The three officers had been waiting to hear word of the decision from Starfleet Command regarding the outcome of the latest mission the Enterprise had returned from two days ago. The delay while Starfleet mulled over the facts had been agonizing for everyone involved but none more so than the three men anxiously waiting for a response together.

Spock turned from the window to focus on the man who had spoken, Admiral Christopher Pike. The words had been spoken for all the men to hear, but Pike directed his words to Spock, emphasizing his regret. Spock knew the Admiral well enough to know he was being sincere.

“No apology is necessary, Admiral,” Spock responded, his voice calm despite the emotional turmoil he was internally experiencing. “Despite my emotional involvements in this particular case, Starfleet regulations are quite clear. We were both aware of the dangers in which we placed ourselves when we enlisted.”

Spock became silent, his gaze still focused outside the window, as Pike watched him, waiting for him to continue. Sensing that Spock wasn’t going to say anything else and with the ever rising tension in the room reaching its peak, Pike felt an uncharacteristic outburst urging to be released. “These damn admirals have been sitting behind a desk for too long. They’ve forgotten what’s it’s like out there in space. That these are real people they send out there and not some damn robots.”

Pike fell into silence, slightly embarrassed by his outburst. He prided himself on his ability to keep his cool during stressful situations, but he found himself unable to do so in this particular case. And he somewhat resented the fact that he was now one of those 'damn admirals' sitting behind a desk, though his new post had been for purely medical reasons rather than personal choice. He had yet to completely recover from the ordeal with Nero and the Romulans several months ago. Feeling the eyes of Kirk and McCoy on the back of his head, Pike took a deep breath and directed his attention towards Spock. “Is there anything I can do, Spock?” Pike asked, wanting desperately to feel useful after failing the task he set before himself.

“No, thank you, Admiral,” Spock replied, turning from the window.

“Very well,” Pike responded quietly. He shifted his gaze quickly to the other men in the room, who were watching Spock as well, trying to gauge his thoughts on the matter. “I’ll let you gentlemen have a moment. Take your time.”

Mid-way to the door, Pike stopped suddenly and turned towards the group of officers. “I want you to know, I’m going to do everything I can on my end to help get Lieutenant Uhura back.”

Spock met Pike’s gaze for the first time and nodded his response. Pike gave him one last glance before turning on his heel and walking out the room. Kirk and McCoy both released frustrated sighs, angry at Starfleet Command for their thoughtless decision and angry at Spock for his apparent nonchalance in the whole situation.

“Well,” Captain Kirk scoffed once Pike was out of ear-shot, shaking his head slightly as though in disbelief. “You’re definitely taking this better than I would were I in your position. You would’ve had to drag me kicking and screaming all the way back to Earth. Screw regulation.”

Spock’s eyebrow lifted at the captain’s words, familiar though they were, but he did not comment on the illogical nature of such infantile actions, as he recognized the saying to express strong disagreement with a given situation. “I fail to see the logic in quarreling over something which cannot be changed.”

“Wait,” Doctor McCoy spoke up, his antagonism over the situation getting the better of him. "'Can’t be changed?' What the hell are you talking about?”

Spock turned his attention to the doctor almost as though he had just realized he was in the room. McCoy had been unusually quiet since Pike broke the news. “The organization that has taken Lieutenant Uhura has been categorized by both Starfleet and the planet of Caries as a terrorist group. Starfleet Regulation Article 291, section 4 forbids Starfleet officers from negotiating with terrorists.”

“You mean there’s nothing we can do?” McCoy asked with incredulity on his face.

“There’s plenty to do. There’s just nothing Starfleet can do,” Kirk responded, his angry gaze on Spock. If he had been in the Commander’s place, he would’ve forsaken protocol - granted, that was standard practice for him anyway - and done everything he could to get Uhura back.

“Correct,” Spock clarified, but his attention seemed to be slightly diverted as he furrowed his brow.

Kirk and McCoy looked at the Vulcan, disbelief on their faces. “This is crazy!” Kirk exclaimed, unable to resist the urge to throw his arms up and turn away from the group.

McCoy let his anger of the situation surface as he stepped towards Spock, his hand pointing furiously at the Vulcan’s as though he were scolding him. “Good God, man! This is your…bond-mate - girlfriend - whatever the hell you Vulcan’s call it - we’re talking about. You can’t tell me you’re seriously going to sit here and do nothing while she’s half-way across the galaxy being held against her will and God knows what else. Surely, not even you are that unemotional. I mean, you did see that -"

Spock abruptly interrupted McCoy, his gaze fierce. “Do not presume that I intend to do nothing, Doctor. The safety and return of Lieutenant Uhura is first and foremost on my mind,” he replied, his voice betraying the slightest hint of offense at McCoy’s accusations.

“Then what the hell are you going to do?” Kirk asked, bringing himself back into the discussion.

Spock uncharacteristically hesitated. “At the present moment, I have not yet formulated a viable plan.”

“Of course not,” McCoy said in aggravation, barely resisting the urge to roll his eyes.

“Well, until you do,” Kirk chimed in, “I’m going to do what I can to see if I can get Starfleet involved. Maybe we could try the whole ‘she’s the wife of the Ambassador’s son’ thing or something.”

Spock raised his eyebrow at the suggestion. “Lieutenant Uhura is not my wife, Captain.”

Kirk shrugged off his response. “She’s close enough. Maybe it’ll guilt-trip them into doing something.”

“I appreciate the offer, Captain, but the likelihood of involving Starfleet is slim. The regulations –"

“Well, if that’s the case,” Kirk interrupted Spock, “maybe we should take matters into our own hands.”

“Jim,” Spock replied, a slightly resigned tone to his voice. “The probability of such an act succeeding is even lower. Without the manpower to take on a heavily armed terrorist group, we would not even be able to-“

“Spock,” Kirk interrupted once more. He stepped towards the Vulcan and clasped a hand on his shoulder, a slight smirk on his face. “If there’s one thing you should know about me so far is that I don’t believe in no-win scenarios. We’ll get Uhura back. One way or another.”

End prologue

Warcraft servers are down and I'm bored outta my mind...so, I decided to do this meme. :)

Reply to this post (let me know you want to be tagged) and I'll give you the name of one person/character. Then answer the questions with pictures of the person/character you were tagged with in your own LJ.

slwmtiondaylitegave me Zachary Quinto ^_^

Be warned...I got a little carried away with some categories.... >_> So...definitely not dial-up friendly. It was just SO hard to pick out just one picture...so, there are several for most categories... <_<

1. As to what’s going on exactly, I’ve decided that it’s probably best not to ask :)

2. Do what feels right.”

The words of his elder self rang in Spock’s mind and refused to leave him. Logic had been the cornerstone of his entire existence as long as he could remember and the request to do what feels right was unusual to say the least. Especially when the advice came from himself. As long as he could remember he had strived to put emotion aside and bring logic to the forefront. It had been more difficult for him than for other Vulcans, courtesy of his human genes, yet he had succeeded in doing so. Now, he was attempting to put emotion to the forefront, to follow his wishes and desires: stay in Starfleet and stay with Nyota.

After the brief discussion with his future self, Spock had stood rooted in the same spot for several minutes, letting his brain process the conversation that had just occurred. He contemplated the words his elder self had spoken with such passion; the insistence that he allow the seeds of friendship to sow with James T. Kirk. Spock had to admit that, despite their misunderstandings and differing views on just about everything, there was something of a kinship between them. He could sense that their relationship could very well blossom into a meaningful, trusting friendship. But his thoughts drifted quickly from the brash captain to Nyota.

Elder Spock had spoken solely of young Kirk, but the lack of Nyota in their conversation puzzled Spock. Had their relationship been different in the other timeline, if they had even known each other? His elder self spoke of how his friendship with Kirk would define them both, but Spock did not wish to be defined solely by one relationship in his life as there were many different types of relationships. His relationship with Nyota was something he held dearly and he did not wish to think that it would mean nothing. He wished to be defined by Nyota as well.

Rash decisions were not a frequent part of his thought-process, as they were seen as being motivated by emotion, but it had been known to happen. His hasty decision to decline the invitation to the Vulcan Science Academy and join Starfleet had been based mostly on the anger and resentment he felt towards the prejudice the Council had of his human mother. The choice he made to enter a romantic relationship with Nyota had been equally impulsive, driven by desire and lust that had grown into something deeper. It was the most emotional decision he had ever made.

He had since made another.

Spock felt the eyes of his father on his back as he turned and began to walk towards the exit of the hanger. Nearby Vulcans occasionally stopped their actions and watched in quiet indignation as the son of the Ambassador left his people behind to remain in Starfleet. But the Ambassador’s gaze did not hold the same disapproval as the other Vulcans. There was a tiny hint of sadness but also a flicker of pride in Sarek’s eyes as his son continued on his path, heedless of the others, head held high and expression revealing nothing, confidence exuding from his body.

Aware that Kirk’s promotional ceremony was minutes away from beginning, Spock made his way towards the hall where it was to take place. Despite that he did feel a sense of pride towards Kirk and his promotion to Captain, Spock was not heading to the ceremony with him in mind. There was the possibility that Nyota would be present. He quickened his steps fractionally as he neared the entrance of the hall. He entered the large open room as other Starfleet officers and cadets were entering and taking their seats. His eyes scanned over the large crowd, attempting to get a glimpse of the familiar xenolinguist.

After not spotting Nyota amongst the Enterprise crew, Spock left the room as stealthily as he had entered. As far as the rest of the crew and Kirk knew, he was on route to the Vulcan colony. He did not feel as though this was the time to inform them otherwise. Besides, he had other pressing matters on his mind, which his had deemed as more important, even if they dealt with matters of the heart.

Spock walked to the nearest computer console and inquired to the whereabouts of Lt. Uhura, not wanting to wander the campus trying to find her. After receiving the response, which came to him as a surprise, Spock swiftly turned and marched towards the officer dormitories.

“Nyota?” Spock called out when he entered his quarters. He was unsure as to why Nyota had decided to remain in his quarters when she had a perfectly functional dormitory of her own. He stepped inside fully, allowing the door to close behind him.

“Qual se tu, Spohkh?” Nyota’s voice answered as she quickly entered the den from the bedroom.

“Ha, k’diwa,” Spock replied, his voice not revealing his confusion of her presence in his quarters. (yes, beloved) “You were not present at Cadet Kirk’s promotional ceremony.”

“Yeah,” Nyota replied, awkwardly. “I just wanted to be alone.”

Spock nodded, his gaze sweeping across the room, temporarily avoiding her gaze. Nyota caught his perusal, and, believing it to be dissatisfaction of her presence in his quarters, blurted out, “I’m sorry.”

Spock’s eyes shot over to her, confusion marring his features. “I beg pardon?”

“My room felt so…empty, and all of Gaila’s stuff was still there. I couldn’t stand it. I…I didn’t know where else to go,” she explained, referring to her Orion roommate that had perished in the battle against Nero.

Spock nodded briefly. He knew of her close friendship with her roommate. Her death and the constant reminders of her were expected to be painful. “It is of no concern,” he reassured her. “You are aware that I have no qualms concerning your presence here. You are more than welcome to enter anytime you please.”

Nyota have him a small smile, meeting his eyes briefly. “I know. I just wasn’t sure with everything going on….” She trailed off. “Why are you here? I thought you were leaving,” she asked suddenly, unable to wait for an explanation.

Spock began to pace, hands clasped behind his back, as he visibly gathered his thoughts. A few seconds later, he began to speak. “I received some advice today from an unlikely source; do what feels right. Though the advice was given to me as it pertained to my commission with Starfleet and my friendship with James Kirk, I cannot but help but think that it would also serve me well in other matters, particularly those concerning you, Nyota.” He had stopped pacing and turned towards Nyota, wanting to gauge her reaction to his next words. “I intend to stay here, in Starfleet. With you.”

Nyota felt her jaw drop at his announcement. She had not expected this. Sure, she had wished for it, dreamed about it, but she never allowed herself to think that it would actually come true. But instead of elation, she felt a wave of guilt. “Spock, please, don’t change your mind because of me.”

Spock furrowed his eyebrows, puzzled by her response. He had not anticipated such a reaction and was now, as humans would say, thrown for a loop. “In our last encounter you expressed desire for me to remain here with you. Are you now saying that you have rescinded those comments?”

“No!” Nyota exclaimed forcibly, assuaging his tiny fears that she had indeed withdrawn her comments. “God, no. It’s just,” she fumbled with her words. She took a deep breath to regain control before finishing. “I don’t want you to do something you’re going to regret.”

“Nyota, I have told you before that I do not have regrets.”

“Yes, but you happen to have huge sense of responsibility, and I’m willing to bet, that it’s just tearing you up inside not to act on those obligations.” She had stepped closer to him, hands on her hips as though she were challenging him.

“Given the nature of our relationship, do I not also have certain obligations towards you?” Spock countered, staring down at her with a raised eyebrow.

The two of them stared one another for a second, before Nyota’s defiant demeanor visibly faltered and her gaze dropped. “It’s not the same thing, Spock,” she said, quietly. She reached up and ran a hand across his chest, smoothing out a small wrinkle that had formed on his uniform. “These are your people, your family. Don’t do this because I’m upset about you leaving,” she stressed, meeting his eye. “You’ll only end up resenting me in the future. You need to do what you need to do. I get that. I really, really do.” She released her hold on his uniform jacket and gave him a brief ironic smile. “I’m a big girl. I would have been fine. Maybe not tomorrow, or maybe not the next month, but eventually, I would have been able to recover emotionally, and move on.”

Spock nodded, removing his gaze from hers. “Of that, I have no doubt, Nyota. However, I am uncertain of my ability to do the same.”

She furrowed her brows in confusion. “What do you mean?”

Spock took a step back from her, returning to his customary stance. He began to pace around the room once more and Nyota couldn’t help but feel as though she was back in one of his classes, watching him give a lecture. “Humans are a resilient species when it comes to interpersonal relationships and their inevitable dissolution. Vulcans, on the other hand, are not so easily adaptable to such changes,” he finished, his eyes finding hers once again.

“Spock…” Nyota dragged his name out.

Spock saw the hesitation on her face, as though she was unsure of where the conversation was going. Perhaps his words were too vague for her, Spock thought. He decided to try a different tactic, a more direct approach. “You asked me once why I chose to pursue an intimate relationship with you,” he said, recalling the conversation from earlier in their relationship when she had spontaneously posed him the question. “I am aware that my response had been less than satisfactory for you just as I am aware that I am not the most affectionate lover.” Spock saw that Nyota opened her mouth to protest and interrupt him, but he spoke first, preventing her from doing so. “Nyota, please, allow me to finish.”

Her jaw snapped closed and she nodded. He gave her a nod of appreciation before continuing, beginning to pace once more. “I have always struggled with my emotions and my choice to devote my life to logic. I fear that, at times, such a decision may have given you the false impression that I am not as emotionally invested in this relationship as you. I sometimes wish that I were capable of expressing my affections in a more apparent manner.”

This time, Spock was unable to prevent Nyota from interrupting him as she sprung forward, grabbing hold of his arm, turning him to face her. “I don’t want you to change, Spock,” she said, forcibly, leaving no possible way he could think otherwise. “I knew what I was getting into when I decided to get involved with you. To change you, would deny the very reason I fell in love with you in the first place. You need your logic.” She took a small step closer and ran her hands over his shoulders, needing to feel him at that moment. “I understand that you’re not blowing me off if you seem aloof. I know that you’re not the cold, emotionless Vulcan that others believe.” She gave him a smile, brushing a hand across his cheek. “Trust me, I know. But, please don’t just change your mind because of me,” she reiterated.

Spock began to grow slightly frustrated at her insistence that he go to the new colony, but he did not allow it to show on his face. It seemed as though nothing he could say would make her see his reasons and know that this was not a flippant decision. He reached up and grasped her hands with his, pulling them from his face before speaking softly. “This is not a decision that I took lightly, Nyota. I contemplated the situation fully.”

Nyota cocked her head slightly, a curious look on her face. “And how long did that take?”

“Four-point-two seconds,” he replied with no hesitation.

“And that was enough time to fully contemplate this decision?” She asked with disbelief evident on her face.

“Precisely.”

“Spock…” Nyota breathed his name, running a hand over her brow.

Spock continued, wanting to prevent her from interrupting him once more. “There are other ways in which I can provide aid to my people that does not involve taking a mate. My dual heritage has made it difficult for some Vulcans to accept me and it may deter female Vulcans from choosing to mate with me.”

Nyota wrinkled her nose in displeasure of his choice of words. “You make it sound like I’m your second choice.”

“On the contrary, Nyota,” he replied emphatically. “You are and always have been my first choice. Despite the fact that we have not bonded nor have we undergone a mind-meld, I find myself more deeply connected to you than anyone else. Even T’Pring did not have the same hold on me as you do.”

Spock pulled his gaze from hers, as he began to feel slightly at a loss for words. He wanted to convey to her the magnitude of his emotions toward her but having never had such a conversation, he was unsure of how to proceed. Humans emphasized the emotional aspect of relationships frequently, often using words to tell each other how they feel about one another or various situations. Spock found the practice to conflict with his Vulcan upbringing, but he was half-human, and his human half wanted to tell Nyota his inner feelings and how much she meant to him. It was just a matter of finding the right words.

Nyota continued to watch him as he began to pace once more, a habit she often found him doing when he was attempting to gather his thoughts. She wanted to interrupt, to try and keep him from a conversation in which he was obviously feeling uncomfortable, to tell him that it was okay, he didn’t need to say anything, but she sensed that this was immensely important to him so she kept silent.

After a few seconds of internally formulating the speech and feelings he wished to convey, Spock took a deep breath and began to speak once more. “When I was a child, I too had asked my father why he had pursued relations with my mother. His response had been similar to the response which I gave you. Something akin to ‘when in Rome,’ if I may. He told me that it was the logical thing to do. I believe that his words at the time influenced me greatly. Logic took precedence over everything else and I came to believe that all emotions, including love, were illogical by definition and I wished to suppress them as much as possible. I now realize the error of those beliefs.”

Spock stopped pacing and turned towards Nyota, catching her gaze as she watched him. Her eyes were bright with tears she struggled to keep at bay. As he continued his speech, he slowly took carefully measured steps towards her, feeling his confidence returning. “Surak’s teachings call for the repression and controlling of emotions, but not necessarily complete eradication. Recent events and candid conversations with my father have helped me come to terms with my emotions, to understand them and to appreciate them, because logic does not always preclude emotion as I had once believed. Sometimes, it is logical to base decisions on emotion, as my father did when he chose to marry my mother.”

Spock came to a stop in front of her, their height difference forcing her to lift her head to keep their gaze. He took a small imperceptible breath before speaking with more conviction, more passion, than she had ever heard him use in all the years she had known him. “I chose to be here, to be with you, Nyota, because I love you.”

His declaration caused such a rush of emotion through Nyota that she could no longer keep the tears at bay. Spock looked on, a slightly startled look worming its way onto his face. The tears were not something he entirely expected as they seem to indicate that she was not pleased with him or his words. “Have I said something wrong?”

A small laugh escaped from Nyota’s lips as she lifted to her toes and kissed him briefly on the cheek. “No, Spock,” she reassured him, giving him a brilliant smile. “Everything you said was perfect.”

She reached up and ran her hands across his face, caressing his ears. “I knew,” she whispered, placing a kiss on his lips. “I knew how you felt.”

Spock’s brow furrowed, trying to recall an event in which he had told her his feelings but could not. “How could you have known? When I had not expressed such feelings before?”

Nyota smiled at his question. It was times like this that reminded her of how literal he could be, how he could remain unaware of what his body language was conveying. As a communications officer, she was trained to notice small indications that a person’s body language could convey as they helped articulate the full meaning of their words or the situation.

Spock continued to wait for an answer to his query as she pulled his head down to meet his lips in a kiss. She pulled back from his lips briefly so she could answer him. “It’s in your eyes.”

His human eyes.

“Qual se tu, Spohkh?” - “Is it you, Spock?”
“Ha, k’diwa,” - “Yes, beloved.”

Everything about the situation was logical, even if she hated it. She hated that she begged him to stay. She hated that he didn’t. Part 1 of 2. A Missing Scene from Star Trek XI.

The battle was over. Nero and his rogue Romulans were dead. The planet of Vulcan was no more. Her remaining people, those that had managed to flee the planet before it collapsed on itself and those scattered about the galaxy, were now finding their way to the human planet Earth to regroup. The proud and infamously closed-off species, realizing the necessity, had accepted Starfleet’s aid. Ships had been outfitted to help transport the Vulcans to the new planet that had been chosen by one of the elder Vulcans. Starfleet supplied the Vulcans with medical supplies to help them through the journey to their new home as Starfleet did everything in their power to make sure the Vulcans would be as comfortable as they could in their situation.

Lieutenant Nyota Uhura walked through the hanger, where several Vulcans and Starfleet officers were assessing various foodstuffs and other material goods to be loaded. She herself had spent the morning translating the situation for a group of older Vulcans, who had not learned Federation Standard, preferring their native language instead.

Now, Nyota was searching for one particular Vulcan, Commander Spock. She hadn’t seen him much since the Enterprise docked for repairs and they transported to Earth, almost a week ago. He had told her that he needed some time to meditate, to regain his emotional control, and there were some personal matters he needed to attend to. While she respected that, she was now finding herself anxious to see him, if for any other reason, to see if he how was doing. She knew that despite his outward appearance, inside, he was barely hanging on. The death of his mother and the loss of his homeworld had taken a huge toll on his emotional state.

Nyota stood tall, almost on her tip-toes, as she scouted the hanger, trying to catch a glimpse of the wayward commander. Her gaze faltered slightly on an older Vulcan, thinking it to be his father Sarek, but when he turned around, she saw that she was mistaken, though there had been something oddly familiar about him. After not finding Spock, Nyota made her way out of the hanger and headed towards the only other place she could think he would be, his quarters.

She quickly navigated the Starfleet Academy campus towards the superior officers’ lodgings and a few minutes later, she arrived at his door. She hesitated. Her close relationship with the commander had afforded her the knowledge of his key code, but she wasn’t sure if now was a good time to enter unannounced. If it had been a few weeks ago, she would not have hesitated, but now, she was not sure if it would be welcome. A few decisive seconds later, she raised her hand and signaled her arrival.

Spock’s voice called out and allowed Nyota entry. She stepped inside the door and went to the living area. One thing that she always couldn't help but feel was slight jealousy at the size of the Officers’ quarters compared to the small one room dorms that cadets were given. They were singles and Nyota had craved that. She loved her roommate, the Orion Gaila, but after so many nights of walking in on her and her latest conquest, Nyota had longed for a quiet place to study. After her relationship with Spock had escalated beyond that of just professor and student, she found herself studying there instead.

“Spock?” Nyota called out, not seeing him in the living area. She shrugged and walked towards his bedroom. She crossed the threshold to the sleeping quarters and found Spock, his back to her, with what looked like luggage on the bed.

“Spock? What’s going on?” Nyota asked with confusion in her voice.

Spock straightened and turned around, facing her. “Lieutenant,” he greeted.

Nyota frowned at his use of her rank rather than her first name, which he had taken to using when they were alone. The fact that he had reverted to formalities worried her.

“I have been intending to speak with you. I uncharacteristically delayed in doing so and now there is no more time,” Spock continued, either not noticing her reaction to his acknowledgement or choosing to ignore it for the time being. “Due to the recent…destruction of Vulcan and loss of the majority of her people, the Council is requesting the presence of the remaining Vulcans to help rebuild our species. As it is, I will be resigning my commission with Starfleet and will join with them at the new colony.”

Nyota felt air leave her lungs. Yes, she was aware of what the Vulcan Council had requested. It was a selfish thought, but she had not entertained the idea that Spock would be going with them, thinking that he would remain here. She now realized that it was a foolish hope as he would choose the most logical course of action and staying in Starfleet, with her, was not it.

After a few long seconds, she finally found her voice. “Is, uh,” she hesitated before continuing, slightly awkward. “Does part of this ‘rebuilding’ include…um, procreating?”

“As the population of our species had decreased dramatically, it would be logical,” Spock replied, matter-of-factly.

“Right,” Nyota uttered, feeling slightly ashamed and embarrassed for her question. Of course, it was logical. Everything about the situation was logical, even if she hated it. The Vulcans needed to see to it that their species was not erased from the universe. “Is T’Pring calling out to you?” she asked, referring to the Vulcan woman that Spock had been bonded with as a child.

Spock shook his head. “No. I have not felt T’Pring through our bond, though weak it may have been, since the destruction of Vulcan. I believe that she was on the planet when it was destroyed.”

Nyota nodded, turning away from him, knowing that she needed to regain control of her emotions before she burst into tears. She knew that this was something that Spock needed to do, but that still didn’t make it any easier and it certainly didn’t make her hate it any less. She was only a human woman and the knowledge that the man she loved was about to leave her for another woman, even if it was a logical decision, hurt. To know that this woman, whoever she may be, would know him, in ways that she never would and never had, made her envious.

“You are upset,” Spock commented, noting her demeanor.

Her first reaction was to downplay her emotions, to lie. “No.”

“Nyota?” he gently pressed, not believing her as she sniffled and reached up and rubbed her hand over her face, trying to ignore the burning sensation in her throat.

“Yes, I’m upset.” She took a deep, shuddering breath. “I’m only human, Spock. We’re irrational like that.” She felt Spock move closer behind her, but she held her ground, knowing that if she looked at him, she would fall apart.

“I,” Spock abnormally paused. “I do not wish to leave, Nyota.”

Nyota spun around at his words; an unexpected vocalization of his emotions. She looked up at his eyes and reached out, grasping the fabric of his uniform. “Then don’t,” she whispered, forcibly. “Stay. With me. With Starfleet. Stay.”

She held his gaze, paying no heed to the tears that were now forming at the corner of her eyes. His face remained as impassive as ever, but she could see the internal struggle in his eyes. His humanity battling his Vulcan half; always a child of two worlds. She held her breath as he tried to resolve the internal conflict.

“I cannot,” he finally replied stoically as he reached down and gently removed her hands from his uniform. “To stay would be a purely emotional response and I cannot allow myself to entertain the possibility. My presence is needed among my people. It is the logical choice of action.”

More often than not, it seemed, the Vulcan half won.

Nyota quickly pulled her hands from his and abruptly turned away from him once more. She struggled to regain control of her tears while coming to terms with the final decision. She knew that his Vulcan heritage was immensely important to him and that he fought everyday to keep his emotional control, more so than the typical Vulcan, and to follow logic. But it didn’t make it hurt any less.

He followed logic almost flawlessly. The only thing she never could understand was his decision to pursue a romantic relationship with her. Not when he had a woman on Vulcan waiting to be his wife and mother of his children. She had asked him one day why he had decided to be in a relationship with her. His response, which consisted of the amount of time they spent together working in close proximity and that since he was on Earth it was logical to explore such aspects of humanity, had left her feeling slightly disconcerted. She never brought the question up again, accepting it as one of the many differences between them.

“Okay,” she said at last, her voice shuddering. “Okay.”

“Nyota?”

She turned to face him at the sound of his voice, her appearance suddenly taking on an air of detachment. The only remaining sign of her distress were the tear stains on her cheeks. “Okay,” she repeated strongly, as if more confident. “I’m just…I’m just being selfish.” She gave a short derisive laugh before meeting his concerned gaze. “You need to do what you have to. I get it. I do.”

Spock continued to watch her, his gaze trying to break through the walls she suddenly built up. He understood what she was attempting to do; to give him the appearance that she was not as emotionally affected by the situation as she previously led him to believe so that he would not worry over her well-being. He appreciated the sentiment, but he felt that it was pointless as he knew that she felt sadness over his imminent departure just as he did.

She raised her right hand and formed the ta’al, the traditional Vulcan salute. “Dif-tor heh smusma,” she spoke the Vulcan farewell flawlessly, as emotionless as possible.

She held the salute, as though waiting for Spock to return it, but instead he gave a small shake of his head and reached up and initiated the ozh’esta, the Vulcan finger embrace. He sent a short burst of emotion that mirrored her sorrow through the connection before grasping her hand fully, pulling her closer to him. He pressed his forehead against hers as he held her hand to his chest, fingers intertwined. “Please,” he whispered. “Do not feel obligated to shield your emotions from me regarding your distress over the situation. I can assure you that they are returned, fully.”

At his words, Nyota felt the dam begin to break, as she felt the tears threaten to return. She wanted to ask him if she would ever see him again, but, fearing the answer, she kept silent. She reached up and ran her left hand gently across his face, before reaching behind his neck to pull his lips to hers. He willingly accepted the kiss and returned it deeply. The two of them stood in their embrace for several minutes, not wanting to leave the other. But the reality of the situation sunk in all too soon. Spock reluctantly pulled away from her kisses. “I must leave. I meet my father in-“

“I know,” Nyota interrupted, not wanting to hear an exact time frame. She lifted her head and captured his lips once more, her arms going around his neck, holding him close. When the kiss ended, she pulled away slightly, and held his gaze as she whispered, “Taluhk nash-veh k’dular.”

Spock’s dark eyes connected with hers, and she swore she saw a surge of raw emotions before it was suppressed. He lifted his hand and brushed away the tears that had slipped down from Nyota’s eyes. “Goodbye, Nyota.”

Nyota closed her eyes, tears escaping, as he gently caressed her cheek one last time before abruptly pulling away. She heard, rather than watched, him reach for his luggage and step around her. Her eyes remained closed as she listened to his footsteps head towards the front entrance to his quarters. She heard the quiet swoosh of the sliding door as he opened it and stepped outside. His footsteps grew more distant as he walked down the hall. She didn’t open her eyes until she heard the second swoosh, signaling that she was alone.

The tears came anew.

*”Dif-tor heh smusma” – Live long and prosper
*”Taluhk nash-veh k’dular.” – “I cherish thee.” –Vulcan declaration of love.

Part 2 coming ASAP :)

Okay…So, I’ve been reading a lot of Star Trek XI fanfiction lately…and I mean, a lot of fanfiction… Granted, most…okay, all of it centers around my new favorite ship, Spock/Uhura. I know I’ve got some newly minted Spock/Uhura fans on my flist :D So, I decided to post this…also partly to help me keep track of what I’ve read and what I am currently reading :)

So, I decided to make this list. I’ve taken the summaries the authors wrote themselves and I will probably eventually add my own commentary to the list, but for now, it’s just the summaries :)

Also, please take note of the ratings if you click on the links. I didn’t write them down, but as the majority of these come from fanfiction.net, the rating is at the top of the page.

I’ve got three tables set up, one for Oneshots, one for Multi-Chaptered/Series and one for Works in Progress.

Happy Reading for those who are interested :D

Also...if you have some suggestions not listed here, post the links..I'm always looking for more :D

First off, I wanna say, that I adore baby-fics (which is strange given that I don't want them myself)...and though I am of the belief that if Spock and Uhura were to try for a kid they'd have to use some type of genetic manipulation to make the kid (like Spock's parents did), if the author does not adhere to this, that won't make me stop reading a story if it's written well :)

A Character's gotta be in Character...especially Spock. OOC!Spock is just...no.

If it becomes painfully obvious that an author has never seen Star Trek before the new movie or didn't do their research into things (which with 40+ years of canon/mythology, it's easy to find)....I might stop reading...unless the story is extremely well written....

Anyway....that's enough rambling...here's the list of fic :D

One-Shots

All in the Mind by MrsTater
Nyota Uhura had always wanted a man who would want her for her mind. When she finally gets what she wants, will she find it all it was cracked up to be?

Caesura by Lanesy
He gives pause for once. Not to think. To feel.

Five Things That Never Happened to Spock by breeshell
Like the title says; five things that never happened to Spock.

The Intimacies of Kisses by snorting_chords
After all, it's highly illogical to fall in love with a kiss. Alternatively known as "five kisses Nyota remembers".

Irony by StarTrekFanWriter
The last thoughts through Kirks mind were, "I cheated -- modified his test, provoked him to a humiliating display of public emotion by mocking his feelings for the death of his mother, took him down as captain...and I insulted his masculinity.”

Linguistics by MrsTater
This relationship isn't easy for him, and this topic must be one of the most uncomfortable aspects for even a half-Vulcan to broach. It probably wasn't the most logical of choices to tease him about the Human struggle for self-expression.

Linguistics by Pat Foley
Uhura meets Spock for the first time.

Joyride by Witblogi
The national xenolinguistics conference is in town, and Spock has offered to take Cadet Uhura. The thing is, she didn't expect to be getting there in quite such... style.

Physician, Heal Thyself by Kristen_Elizabeth
McCoy took an oath to help those in need. But who helps him?

This State of Almost Romance by The Silver Feathered Raven
Days will stretch out into the future, and nothing will change because neither one will make the next step in this almost-romance.

A Thousand Words for Snow by LJC
Vulcans have no word for "lover".

Obligatory "how they met" story. A slowburning bit of fluff inspired by a recent bout of Mono... doncha wish you had a Spock to look after you sometimes?
Fact versus Truth(WIP)
She kissed him. It's been a month now, and he still hasn't kissed her back. A Spock/Uhura story from Spock's POV during their days at the Academy-- back by popular demand: this is the sequel to my other story "The Kissing Disease" but it stands alone. It's going into their 3rd year at the Academy and feelings are finally coming to a head, with a little help from Capt. Pike. It is not ‘time’, as you say.”
Author’s Notes: This is the first Star Trek fic I have ever written. I’m not new to Trek. In fact, I’ve been watching it my entire life but I’ve never felt compelled to write fanfic until the new movie. I blame JJ Abrams and the awesomeness that was Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana as Spock and Uhura. :)

The smell of Vulcan incense filled the living area of the apartment that Spock shared with his wife. The hour was late, but the over the past several months, he had to adapt the timing of his daily ritual of meditation. The drastic changes to Nyota’s body and hormone levels had recently began making her nauseous at the slightest smell of the incense. As a result, Spock found himself delaying his meditation until late in the night while Nyota was asleep in the other room.

Spock instructed the computer to dim the lights as he sat, cross legged, on the floor and began drawing in long, deep breaths. His eyes fluttered closed as his breathing deepened and his mind became clearer. Meditation was necessary for Vulcans to find their center and retain control over their emotions. It also helped relax Spock’s mind, releasing the stress of the day.

Both he and Nyota had accepted temporary assignments to Starfleet Academy, with the promise from James Kirk that their positions on the Enterprise would be waiting for them when they were ready. Nyota’s pregnancy had been difficult because of the copper- vs. iron-based blood battle warring inside the unborn child, though, the pregnancy was not as harsh on her as it had been for Spock’s mother. There had been many close calls throughout the early stages of the pregnancy and neither one of them wanted to take the risk of remaining aboard the Enterprise, especially not after the difficulty they had conceiving the child.

Due to the nature of Spock’s Vulcan blood, they were not able to conceive naturally, instead having to rely on invitro-fertilization as his parents had with him. After a time, Spock had even begun to wonder if his hybrid status prevented his own fertility and was about to request that he be tested until they had found a doctor that had been able to succeed where the others had failed.

Spock felt Nyota’s presence enter the room, but he did not allow it to break his concentration, instead his eyes remained closed and his attentions focused on his breathing. “Spock?” a slightly hesitant voice broke through his concentration.

He took a deep breath before responding, slightly slackening his control. She rarely interrupted him from meditation, knowing that he relied heavily on his daily ritual, so the disruption stirred him. “Yes, Nyota?”

“It’s time.”

“I assume you are referring to the birth of our child. There are still eight days, two hours, thirty-five minutes and fourteen seconds left in your gestation period. It is not ‘time’, as you say. Please allow me to complete my meditation,” he spoke his words distantly.

“Spock!” A sharp gasp drew Spock fully out of his meditative state. He turned his gaze in the direction of the bedroom door to find Nyota leaning heavily against the wall, breathing pained, and hands cradling her belly. She spoke urgently. “The baby doesn’t care if it’s convenient for you or not. It’s coming. Now.”

The realization of the situation now fully set in, with the haze of the meditation gone. Spock pulled himself to his feet and took four long strides towards his wife, who had begun to practice the breathing techniques she had learned in Lamaze class as a contraction began to take hold over her.

He wrapped his arms around her shoulders and proceeded to lead her in the direction of the sofa. She clung to him, gripping his arms tightly as another strong contraction tore through her body. She halted her steps, the pain too much and only Spock’s arms around her prevented her from falling to the ground.

He had extensively studied female human pregnancy and childbirth from the moment they had first decided they wanted a child together. He knew what to expect and when to expect it, as far as the changes to her body were concerned. He knew that women frequently experienced nausea called ‘morning sickness,’ a misnomer as Nyota frequently experienced it at night rather than morning. He had learned of the unusual food cravings women had during pregnancy when she woke him in the middle of the night demanding he get her ice cream and pickles. He had learned of the increased hormone levels and their affect on Nyota’s moods, having experienced her intense happiness one moment and her sudden irritation the next more times than he would like to remember.

But no amount of research could adequately prepare him for the feeling of bewilderment as he realized that the moment was here; soon he would be a father.

“I shall summon an ambulance,” Spock said, struggling to maintain his composure. He made a motion to head in the direction of the comm. panel. Though he knew that women often experienced intense pain during childbirth, the sight of his wife undergoing such pain was troubling.

“No,” Nyota gasped, reaching out to grab his arm, stopping him. “There’s no time. You’re going to have to take me yourself.”

Spock began to protest but thought better of it; instead he began to get ready for the trip to the hospital. He knew that they had prepared well for this day. Plans had been made, the nursery prepared months in advanced, and overnight bags packed. They were as prepared as they ever could be. So, why couldn’t he remember where anything was?

He wandered around the room, trying to find the overnight bag that Nyota prepared for them. Inside it was a change of clothing for both her and Spock. She had told him that it was entirely possible that they would remain at the hospital overnight, or even longer, depending on how long her labor was.

“Spock, what’s wrong?” Nyota asked, sounding less pained and more in control of herself, as she watched her husband wander aimlessly around their living quarters. Spock deducted that the contraction must’ve past.

“I am merely trying to ascertain where the luggage has been placed,” he told her from his position in the far corner of the room.

“Uh,” she replied, confusion coloring her voice. “Did you look by the door?” she finished, pointing in the direction of the door, where a large overnight bag lay slumped against the wall.

Had Spock been completely human, he would have sheepishly ducked his head in embarrassment while quickly walking towards the bag. As it were, he simply walked towards it, purpose in his stride.

He picked the bag up before going to Nyota and helping her to her feet. She clung to him as he helped her outside and to the hover car she had insisted they buy. Once Spock helped Nyota inside the vehicle, he told her, “I will inform the medical staff of our imminent arrival.” Spock pulled out his communicator and paged the hospital as he made his way to the driver’s side of the hover car. Once his call was complete, he sped towards the Academy’s medical center.

The drive to the medical center was only ten minutes away, yet for Nyota, it felt longer. Her contractions had intensified as the baby came closer to making its debut. She was relieved to see that Spock’s communication with the hospital paid off as she was immediately surrounded by medical staff as soon as Spock pulled the hover car in the emergency room entrance.

Nyota was promptly helped into a wheelchair and wheeled inside. Spock kept his pace next to her, as she reached out and gripped his hand once more. “You’re coming in, right?” Nyota asked, her eyes pleading with him.

One area throughout the pregnancy that both Spock and Nyota had discussed ad nauseum had been his presence at the birth of their child. On Vulcan, wives did not expect their husbands to be present at the birth of their children. It was not something that was done, not like on Earth. Spock had expressed some discomfort at being in the same room, as there was no logical reason for him to be so as he would not be helping in the birthing process. His own father had not been present for his birth, having been away at a meeting.

Nyota insisted that she would feel better if he were present. Even Spock’s mother had expressed a desire for his father to be in the room with her during his birth and was upset when he missed it. One day early in Nyota’s pregnancy, in a rare candid conversation between father and son, Sarek had told Spock that one of the few regrets he had was not being there to witness his birth. Such openness was not commonplace between Spock and his father and as a result, Spock began to truly consider being present for the birth.

“Of course, k’diwa,” Spock reassured Nyota as he followed the team of doctors and nurses into the maternity room that had been set aside for the expectant mother.

True to his word, Spock had remained at Nyota’s side throughout the entire labor process. He comforted her, held her hand when she reached out to him when the pain from the contractions were almost too much for her to bear. He gently wiped the sweat from her brow and uttered words of encouragement as she pushed, crying out as the pain intensified.

After many long and painful hours, Nyota gave one final push and their son entered the world, crying out.

Later that day, Spock stood outside the window of the hospital nursery where several bassinets of newborns stood in a row to allow the mesmerized faces of onlookers to gaze upon them. His watchful and inquisitive eye remained focused on the bassinet that held his son. He had been observing the sleeping infant for several minutes, mentally cataloging every freckle, every feature, every tiny movement. Spock’s eyes took in the slightly upswept brows and the faintly pointed ears, signs of the Vulcan blood coursing through his veins. His complexion was darker than Spock’s own, yet lighter than his mother’s.

“Ah, there’s the brand new father!”

Spock’s attention jerked away from his son at the sound of the excited voice. He had been so enraptured with his son, that he had not heard the footsteps of James T. Kirk strolling down the hall, a large smile on his face. In his hand, he clutched two large, brown, cylindrical rolls that Spock recognized as cigars. Each one was wrapped with a blue ribbon with a small note card loudly proclaiming “It’s a boy!” Spock decided to let his curiosity over Kirk’s sudden appearance take precedence over his curiosity about the cigars.

“Captain?” he questioned. “How did you know? I have not yet sent out a communication to announce the birth.”

Kirk stood next to Spock, facing the window and let his gaze shift over to Spock’s son. “Connections, Spock, connections,” he replied cryptically.

Spock’s eyebrow shot up at the response. “Sir, please explain.”

Kirk turned back to Spock and gave a small laugh. “You know, for a race that prides itself on suppressing emotional responses, the one emotion you can’t seem to hide is confusion.” Spock continued to stare at the Captain and Kirk took a deep breath, realizing that perhaps Spock was not in the mood for jokes.

“Bones heard on the grapevine that Lt. Uhura had gone into labor,” Kirk explained. “We weren’t that far out so we decided to drop by. It’s not every day that the only Vulcan in Starfleet is witnessing the birth of his kid.” Kirk shot Spock an award-winning smile before reaching out and slapping him on the back, ignoring the fleeting look of annoyance that crossed Spock’s face at the touch.

“How’s Uhura?” Kirk asked seriously, as the two men let their eyes drift back to the child. He knew that the pregnancy had been difficult at times.

“Lt. Uhura endured a long and intensive labor,” Spock replied, remembering the hours with perfect clarity. “She is now resting.”

“Good,” Kirk nodded before letting his gaze settle on the infant. “He’s beautiful, Spock,” he added a moment later.

“Yes,” Spock agreed, staring at his son. “He is quite perfect.”

Kirk smirked at the half-Vulcan’s words, recognizing that they had been spoken without any real thought; a purely emotional response. “I thought there was no such thing as perfection,” he teased, recalling Spock’s consistent assertions on the matter.

“I feel I must rescind those comments, Captain,” Spock replied coolly. “Apparently I was mistaken.”

Kirk gave a short laugh at his friend’s stoicism despite his obvious pride in the child. It appeared that all new fathers, human or otherwise, were susceptible to the feelings of admiration and wonderment.

“I must admit, Jim,” Spock began stoically, attempting not to let emotion enter his voice. “I do feel,” he paused, trying to find the correct word. “…Apprehensive now that my son has been born. I cannot help but wonder if I will be an adequate father.”

“I believe, Mr. Spock, you’ll be perfectly perfect,” Kirk emphatically answered what he believed to be true, deciding not to comment on Spock’s noticeable nervousness at the prospect of being a father.

“How can you be sure?” Spock asked, unable to simply accept Kirk’s answer.

“I just know, Spock. I just know.”

Before Spock could question him further, Kirk turned and threw his arm around Spock’s shoulders, pulling him away from the nursery. “Now, come on,” he said, brandishing the cigars Spock had noticed earlier. “I’m gonna teach you about an old Earth tradition men do to celebrate the birth of a baby.”

k’diwa - Vulcan word for ‘beloved’
I'm going to keep spoilers as vague as possible, but since the film is based on fact, it's not like there is any real surprises...except a few liberties regarding timelines, but otherwise, the film is quite faithful to fact...

Hm...well, first things first, Johnny was amazing...but then, did you really expect any different :)

My main problem with the movie had nothing to do with the story or the acting...but more of Michael Mann's style... Now, I've never seen a Michael Mann film before today so I don't know if it's just his usual style, but he really needed to back off a little on the handicam work, especially when the scene is just still. I found the camera movements distracting. It felt a little like we were watching Cops instead of a film.

Another thing that kinda bugged me was the look. It was filmed completely in HD video (from my understanding)...which looks dramatically different from film. I never really noticed that there was that much of a difference until now...It took me a while to get used to it. I guess, from my perspective, if shooting a period piece, I would have chosen film instead, but Mann has a love affair with HD so....

I'm thinking that he wanted to make the movie look and feel more real...but, for me, I would have gone with film and used steadicams. But that's just me :)

As for the acting, of course I thought Johnny was very good. He went for more subtle (think Finding Neverland) than in-your-face...which I felt worked because he's playing a real guy. Some might feel that he should have gone larger than life, but I think it would have detracted. He doesn't need that. Johnny's charisma is more than enough. :)

Christian Bale...felt a little wooden to me...I don't know....I'm not a fan of his really, and I haven't seen much of his work, but I've never really been drawn to him...and the only reason I can think of is that I'm just not a fan of his style. But, it's not like his performance detracts from the movie. He is adequate as Melvin Purvis, but I wasn't drawn in all that much.

Overall, I do recommend the movie to others, if for no other reason to catch Johnny :) I only wish they released this closer to Oscar season...It doesn't feel like a summer movie; it's got Oscar Fodder written all over it....and we all know that the Academy voters tend to forget things that happen in the summer...

FINALLY! I have finished the digital painting I’d been working on for weeks… It took me forever to do the hair…and I’m not entirely satisfied with his eyebrows, but *shrug* :)

Anyway…here it is, followed by close up detailed images (zoomed in 50%) and a flash file that shows the step by step progression, minus the first few steps because I forgot to capture them :) This post is probably not dial-up friendly ….so, please allow for time to load :) Especially the flash file.

Also, please forgive the watermarks…can never be too careful :)

(click for Full Size)

.

Side by Side with Original version

(click for larger)

Details

(click for larger)

(click for larger)

(click for larger)

(click for larger)

Image Progression

The flash file is approximately 3MBs…please allow time for it load….

<lj-embed id="103" />

First look at Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"

Wow....seriously.

The first publicity photos (and 3 concept arts) of Tim Burton's upcoming Disney production, Alice in Wonderland, were released today and....talk about GORGEOUS!

Whether or not you Burton is your style (me, personally, I love him), there is no denying the artistic beauty that goes into each and everyone of his films; there's a reason why his films nominated for Art Direction Oscar has yet to lose. He truly is one of the few remaining directors who puts the art in his work rather than the mainstream.

For this film, Burton is using a mix of live action and 3D animation....

Here's a few images (3 concept arts and 3 character publicity images that are due to be hung in movie theatres this week) including the text from USAToday:

He has finally found his Alice
The critter (voiced by Welsh actor Michael Sheen of Frost/Nixon) checks his timepiece while Alice (Australian actress Mia Wasikowska) takes in the view, one that she has seen before. “The rabbit is convinced he has the right Alice,” says producer Richard Zanuck. “He has been looking for her for years.” And – shades of Burton's Edward Scissorhands – topiaries in the shape of a giraffe, a dodo and other creatures fill the garden.

(click for larger)

Strong, whether tall or small
Just as the trees talked in Oz, the roses that blossom in Wonderland can hold a conversation. Alice greets them along the entrance to what appears to be a forest of giant mushrooms. But as in the book, her size shrinks and grows throughout her journey. Burton has said of choosing Wasikowska, 19, to play Alice, “We met a lot of people, but she just had that certain kind of emotional toughness, standing her ground in a way that makes her kind of an older person with a younger person’s mentality.”

(click for larger)

Welcome to our Wonderland
Egg-shaped Tweedledee and Tweedledum, who are created through motion-capture technology, are among the first characters to greet Alice. They take her to meet the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). The twins are played by popular British comic Matt Lucas, best known for the TV series Little Britain.

(click for larger)

Characters

The White Queen
Played by Anne Hathaway

The White Queen, who was overthrown by her sister, “is beautiful but over the top. She doesn’t walk. She floats. She’s very eccentric,” Producer Zanuck says.

(click for larger)

The Red Queen
Played by Helena Bonham Carter

Wonderland was a peaceful kingdom until the Red Queen took power. “The creatures are ready to revolt and waiting for Alice to help them,” Zanuck says. Bonham Carter has a digitally swelled head to play the domineering crimson ruler, who likes nothing better than to scream “Off with their heads!”

(click for larger)

The Mad Hatter
Played by Johnny Depp

“Off his rocker”: Johnny Depp concocts another memorably trippy character as the Mad Hatter. Besides his Carrot Top mop, Depp undergoes a transformation with the addition of enlarged eyes tinted yellow. “He is so much fun and nutty, I can’t imagine anyone else doing it,” says Zanuck. The actor also employs an accent that Zanuck can only describe as indescribable.

(click for larger)

Wow…I knew it was going to be a bit ‘Burton-ized’ but I didn’t quite picture anything like this. I can’t wait… Johnny Depp’s transformation is quite…shocking. I’d seen the preliminary image of his costume check but it certainly didn’t look as wild as this one. :D

Can not wait.

Source: http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2009-06-21-alice-in-wonderland_N.htm
So...I'm working slow. :) I've started refining some areas...even though I'm not done with major areas, but *shrug* My order is chaotic. :)

Anyway, this might be my last update until I am completely done with it...though that might depend on how long it takes :)

So...here is my portrait thus far:

(click for larger)

And just because I feel like it; here is a close up of the image so far :) It's zoomed in 33% so you can kind of get an idea of how large the image actually is :D <strike>(sorry for the watermark...can never be too careful :))</strike>

(click for larger)

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
